Consider
what would happen if the captain becomes incapacitated or falls overboard. You
are Suddenly In Command. The US Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a
course to help deal with situations that unexpectedly put you in control.
This 4-hour boating safety primer is designed for
those not generally at the helm, and will help you to “be prepared” in case of
an emergency.
You will learn about vessel nomenclature and operating
principles, the causes and mitigation of boating mishaps, basic boat handling,
and safety equipment that should be on board.
News reports contain many stories about passengers
who, unaware of basics such as starting the engine or operating the radio, watch
in horror as a strong wind blows the boat away faster than a captain who has
fallen overboard can swim.
Mishaps occur in seconds, so be prepared.
